Hydrotherapy for Dogs

The evidence in support of hydrotherapy for a variety of veterinary patients is overwhelmingly strong. A number of recent studies have shown that hydrotherapy is greatly beneficial for animals suffering with osteoarthritis by decreasing pain and improving conditioning. In addition, many studies have demonstrated a faster recovery for dogs that have received underwater treadmill therapy following a cranial cruciate injury repair as well as surgery for hip dysplasia. Still other studies have shown positive effects such as an improved range of motion and gait for dogs dealing with elbow dysplasia. For dogs dealing with neurological injury, underwater treadmill therapy will strengthen and maintain muscle, increase awareness of body position and movement (proprioception), and modify gait patterns.
